Finding Inspiration

Whether we pursue arts as a professional artist or a hobbyist, there are moments which we find ourselves having struggle to find inspiration. Sometimes we may even intend to work but don’t know where to start and what to work on. I find myself having this struggle more when I am less invested in creating art. I heard somewhere, “creativity” and “practice” are two inseparable beings: in order to be creative, you have to roll up your sleeves and start making and creating, you have to practice!!

From one hand, creativity ignites practice, from the other hand, practice inspires you and ignites new ideas. They have a chicken and egg relationship, intertwined and inseparable.

So whenever you think you are out of ideas and your creative juices has dried, start making, playing and exploring without overthinking or even without thinking. Creativity will come after!

As I mentioned the opposite is true as well: When you have a great idea and feel inspired, you have to give life to your idea. Otherwise it dies over time. So again creativity or inspiration and practice or action are both in the same loop and you can not say exactly which one causes which.

Creatives are giving life to their ideas by creating them, and this takes energy. So this is why creative people, like artists, writers, chefs, musicians, performers, and whoever is turning their thoughts/ideas into a unique work, need to fuel their soul more often.

In her book “The Artist’s Way“ Julia Cameron, called this fueling action “Artist Dates“. “Artist Dates” are those blocks of time which artists(creators) should consider for them selves. Based on what Cameron says, you should be very protective of this time and not share it with anyone except you and your inner child, no spouse, no child, no lover or friend. And you need to consider at least 2 hours a week for your “Artist Date“. Spend this time by taking a walk in nature, listening to your favorite music or doing whatever you feel refreshed and recharged! This will help your creativity flourish.

In teaching children, my main focus is on the process of art-making. I want kids to feel free to express their ideas without being fearful of making good results or being judged. I think being worried to get perfect results, is the main reason that stops us to improve not just in art but in any aspects of our lives. Do not compare yourself with others. Your path is different and unique to you. Be kind to yourself and don’t let your biggest, and meanest enemy which is your negative thoughts stops you from doing what you are capable of.

Jim Kwik (in his book “Limitless Brain“)talks about how killing ANTs (Automatic Negative Thoughts) saves your brain’s health. And now we know it saves your creativity and helps you feel inspired!

I would love to hear What your strategies or struggles are in finding inspiration. Comment below and share your thoughts.
